The scientists had known. Of course they had; but not at first. Oh, it wasn't obvious, no. At first, the continents had been moving along as usual, at their own pace: slow. Very slow. At the beginning of the 20th century, however, the continents began to move faster, though only slightly. No one saw cause for concern. The change was barely noticeable. But the land was speeding up by the middle of the 20th century. Towards the end of the century, the rate at which the land was moving had tripled, almost quadrupled. 3.5 Inches a year. Not enough for anyone to really notice, unless you were taking measurements and keeping records.
Now there were open debates, discussions, and research programs, but not so open that the public knew about them. No need to cause panic, all the important government officials said. By the beginning of the 21st century, it was official. The continents were definitely moving at an increased rate. Not only though, but different sides of continents were moving in different directions. it was as though world decided to pull itself apart. Scientists, by 2010, attributed this to the heated on the planet, causing molten rocks under Earth's tectonic plate to turn into lava, letting the plates slip by more easily, with less friction.
Having found a reason, the worlds leaders began working together to find a solution. Fast. The rate of movement was increasing with every passing year, faster than it ever has before. By 2014, with the plates moving 4 inches a year, people were suddenly no longer allowed to drive vehicles. Then subway systems became shut down. Gasoline and oil were no longer for public use. They were only usable by hospitals, research facilities, and a few select wealthy families. The cost of electricity spiked. In some countries, things like computers were discontinued for public use, and some countries went as far as to make things like stealing punishable by death, since supplies would soon be very limited. The world changed, trying to prevent the planet from continuing to heat up.
But people weren't just going to sit there and take that. They didn't understand why their governments were taking their rights away. They weren't given any reasons. By 2017 there were mass riots, shootings, and even terrorist attacks. Despite all this, no one would enlighten the people as to what was really going on. By 2020, millions of people had died all across the world from public shooting and mass riots and tramplings. In some countries, the government began open fire on resistors and rioters.
Of course, it didn't end there. Sometimes, the movement of the tectonic plates would suddenly quicken, and cause a tsunami. Just a medium sized one, nothing huge, but damaging enough to take out a small town or two on a coast. Volcanoes that had been long dormant now began to show signs of activity, and active volcanoes began to suddenly erupt. The number of earthquakes also began to increase, occurring where they've never occurred before. There was no where to hide. Peoples lives where plucked away one natural disaster at a time.
In 2035, everyone considered to be "in the know" disappeared, probably off to some safe-zone. No one knows. The worlds population, by then, was a third of what it had been. Now, without leaders to even attempt to keep control, the people went wild.
But humans weren't the only ones that were affected. Entire habitats changed, some prey left or went extinct, and were replaced with new, unfamiliar prey. Environments changed. Animals of all kinds had to learn to adjust quickly or die.
By 2050, the worlds population was down to a hundredth of what is was, dispersed across the planet. In the year 2057, every tectonic plate suddenly lurched forward, miles in different directions. This ripped lands apart, shoving some lands into others, creating mountains and valleys. All of a sudden, several different ecosystems were thrown together. Animals encountered other animals that they'd never imagined before. In order to survive the new world, they had to learn to adapt. Felines, especially the larger species, were one of the most likely to survive, being the best fitted for survival. They adapted more easily in relation to other species, due to their diet and strength.
By pure coincidence, or perhaps even fate, several diverse species ended up on the same large island, with several different habitats. Several of these species were large cats. By some understanding among the animals, the island became known as Niri. This island is devoid of human life; ruled only by an animal kingdom. The cats need to learn to change and problem solve to survive, perhaps changing their old ways. The world is new again. Since the humans almost completely killed themselves to extinction, the planet has healed itself, and the plates are moving back at their normal rate.
All is peaceful. But can the felines live here, in a hectic island, where opposite habitats exist side by side?
This island, Niri Island, is where our rpg makes it's home. The year is 2060. It has been 3 years since "The Lurch".
